What Your Body is Trying to Tell You: Understanding the Hidden Messages in Tension, Stress, and Pain

Your body isn’t the problem—it’s the messenger.

That tightness in your chest, the tension in your jaw, the heaviness in your shoulders—it’s not random. It’s your body’s way of speaking to you, asking for your attention, and guiding you back to wholeness.

But here’s the thing: Most of us were never taught how to listen. Instead, we were taught to push through, to numb out, to ignore the discomfort until it becomes impossible to avoid.

Your body is holding your story.

Let’s learn how to listen to it...

Why Your Body Holds Your Story

Your body is more than just a vehicle—it’s an archive of your life. Every experience, every emotion, every unspoken truth gets stored somewhere in your body.

  • That clenching in your jaw? It might be the words you didn’t say.
  • The ache in your chest? A reminder of the grief you haven’t fully felt.
  • The tension in your shoulders? The weight of everything you’ve been carrying for too long.

Your body holds on because it’s trying to protect you. It’s learned that holding tension is safer than letting it all fall apart. But while that protection might have helped you survive, it’s not what you need to thrive.

The Connection Between Emotions and Physical Pain

Your emotions don’t just live in your mind—they live in your body.

  • When you suppress anger, it doesn’t disappear—it shows up as tightness in your neck.
  • When you avoid sadness, it settles into your chest, making every breath feel heavier.
  • When you push through fear, your nervous system holds that tension, leaving your body stuck in survival mode.

Your body doesn’t forget. It keeps the score, holding onto these patterns until you’re ready to release them.

The good news? These physical sensations aren’t permanent—they’re invitations.

How to Decode the Messages Your Body Sends

Listening to your body starts with curiosity, not judgment.

The next time you feel tension, pain, or stress, ask yourself:

  1. Where is it? Place your attention on the part of your body where the sensation lives.
  2. What does it feel like? Is it tight, heavy, sharp, or dull?
  3. What might it be trying to tell me? Does this feeling remind you of anything—a moment, a memory, an emotion you’ve been avoiding?

Sometimes the message is clear, and sometimes it’s not. Either way, the act of listening is an act of liberation.

A Step-by-Step Practice to Begin Releasing Stored Tension

Here’s a simple somatic exercise to start building trust with your body:

  1. Find a quiet space
Sit or lie down somewhere comfortable where you won’t be interrupted.

  2. Tune into your body
Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Notice where you feel tension or discomfort.

  3. Place your hands on that area
For example, if your chest feels tight, rest your hands gently over your heart.

  4. Breathe into the sensation
Take slow, deep breaths, imagining the air flowing directly to that part of your body. As you exhale, imagine the tension softening and releasing.

  5. Ask your body a question
Quietly ask, “What do you need right now?” and trust whatever answer comes up—whether it’s a word, an image, or a feeling.

  6. Give yourself permission to let go
If it feels safe, imagine the tension leaving your body, as if you’re exhaling it into the air around you.

This practice isn’t about forcing anything.
It’s about creating space for your body to be heard.

Your Body Isn’t Broken—It’s Guiding You

Imagine this:

  • Feeling the tension in your body dissolve as you learn to release what no longer serves you.
  • Moving through your day with ease, no longer weighed down by old patterns.
  • Trusting your body as a partner in your healing, not something you have to fight or fix.

Your body already knows what you need. It’s been waiting for you to listen.
