How to Rewire Your Nervous System (And Stop Blocking Your Success)
Feb 03, 2025I wasn’t supposed to be here. Not running a successful business, anyway.
As the granddaughter of Mexican migrant workers, I grew up hearing that “people like us” don’t build wealth. That we don’t go to college. That success is for other people—people with privilege, with connections, with easier starting points.
My subconscious recorded every word.
It shaped what I believed was possible for me.
It created an upper limit on what I thought I could achieve.
But stubborn as I am, I refused to let that be my reality.
So I fought my way to success.
With sheer will, I left my hometown, put myself through college, and built a career as an educator. I worked relentlessly, outworking my circumstances, proving—to myself and everyone watching—that I could rise above what I was told was possible.
But success came at a cost.
I was always on edge. Always pushing harder, saying yes to too much, sacrificing sleep, rest, and joy for the next milestone. I burned out, recovered just enough to keep going, then burned out again. It was a cycle I couldn’t escape.
Then, I did the “impossible” again—I left the safe, traditional path and built a successful transformational coaching business.
But the same patterns followed me. No matter how much money I made, no matter how many lives I changed, I would always hit an invisible wall. I’d expand, then contract. Big wins were followed by unexplained exhaustion, overthinking, or the sudden urge to pull back.
For years, I thought this was just part of the process. That success had to feel this way.
Until I realized something no one had ever taught me:
Success isn’t just about how hard you work or how much you want it.
Nor is it limited by your past.
Success is driven by nervous system capacity.
And the good news is that your capacity is 100% expandable.
Which means the upper limit you keep hitting is not who you are.
It’s just what your system has been wired to hold.
And that wiring can be rewritten!
Why Your Nervous System Blocks Success (Even When You Want It)
Most people think success is about doing more.
More strategy. More mindset work. More action.
But real, sustainable expansion isn’t about doing more. It’s about being able to hold more.
Your nervous system has been shaped by every experience you’ve ever had.
And if past experiences have wired your body to equate success, wealth, or visibility with stress, rejection, over-responsibility, or instability—then the moment you start expanding, your system will pull you back to what feels familiar.
Not because you’re failing.
Not because you’re “not cut out for it.”
But because your body believes it’s keeping you safe.
Until you rewire that you will keep hitting the same upper limits, no matter how much you consciously want to grow.
How to Rewire Your Nervous System for More Success, Wealth & Visibility
The good news? Your nervous system is adaptable.
It can be retrained to hold more success, without shutting down, sabotaging, or contracting.
Here’s how to start:
-
Get Out of Your Head & Into Your Body
Most people try to fix their upper limits with mindset work alone. But if the body still registers expansion as a threat, no amount of affirmations will override that.
Start noticing:
- Where does your body contract when you think about success?
- Do you feel tension, tightness, or a sudden urge to “check out”?
- What happens in your breath when you imagine receiving more?
If success still feels like something you have to chase—instead of something you can hold—your body is running on an old setting.
Try this: Pause. Breathe. Notice what happens in your body as you imagine your next level. Instead of forcing yourself forward, try bringing awareness and safety to the resistance first.
-
Regulate Before You Rise
Your nervous system doesn’t respond to force—it responds to safety.
If you’re constantly pushing yourself to the next level, your body will perceive growth as pressure—and pressure as a threat.
Before trying to “break through,” regulate your system first.
Some ways to do this:
- Slow, deep breathing (inhale through the nose for 4 counts, exhale for 6)
- Grounding techniques (press your feet into the floor, feel your body in space)
- Movement-based release (gentle swaying, stretching, walking)
The more your body associates expansion with calm instead of chaos, the easier it becomes to hold success without resistance.
-
Expand in Micro-Doses (Instead of Overwhelming Your System)
Your nervous system doesn’t respond well to big, sudden jumps.
If you try to expand too fast, too soon, your body will trigger resistance in the form of self-doubt, procrastination, exhaustion, or sudden “life chaos.”
Instead of forcing yourself into bigger levels of success, normalize growth in small, safe increments.
If visibility feels unsafe → Start by showing up in smaller, lower-pressure ways.
If receiving more money feels overwhelming → Practice holding small amounts without immediately spending or redistributing.
If working less feels uncomfortable → Start by pausing for just 10 extra minutes a day without guilt.
The goal is to introduce expansion in a way that doesn’t activate your body’s alarm system.
-
Release Old Success Survival Patterns
If success has historically felt like something you had to earn through struggle, over-efforting, or burnout—your body might not trust that ease is safe.
Some common patterns that show up:
- Feeling guilty for having more when others don’t
- Subconsciously attracting chaos or distractions when things are going well
- Constantly seeking the next goal instead of allowing yourself to have what you’ve already built
Rewiring your nervous system means unlearning the idea that struggle is necessary.
What if success could feel normal instead of like something you constantly have to fight for?
Try this: Notice where you still equate success with stress and how it feels in your body. Is it more visibility that makes you feel like hiding? Or more responsibility that causes a contraction? Managing a team that feels overwhelming? Once you pinpoint what it is and how it feels to you, ask: What if this could feel safe instead?
Imagine a scenario of what it would feel like if you felt safe with more success. And ask, “what would it feel like in my body to feel safe with more [visibility, responsibilities, wealth…etc]?”
Repeat this practice to anchor in a new reality of feeling safe with MORE success.
-
Track & Celebrate Your Expanding Capacity
Your nervous system needs proof that it’s safe to hold more.
If you don’t consciously track your expansion, your subconscious will default back to old settings.
Each day, notice:
- Where did I allow myself to receive without shrinking?
- Where did I show up in a way that felt slightly edgy but safe?
- Where did I hold more success, wealth, or ease than I used to?
Success doesn’t have to be a fight.
The more you acknowledge your nervous system expanding, the more it integrates as your new normal.
